AI in the military is becoming a greater concern nowadays with its use in modern wars. Many companies such as Meta and OpenAI are providing many services to the Department of Defence and defence contractors in the USA.
Is this something we should be concerned about or is it necessary for the US and AI companies to partner with each other for national defence reasons?
When human lives are on the line, the risk becomes greater - which is something to certainly allocate some concern to. However, at some point, the advantages in true accuracy that an AI model may be able to provide would be more accurate than a human, leading to better outcomes (less innocent people targeted, for example).
It seems like a deep subject when you ask of we should be doing this, but I don’t see it as deep. We are doing it. We are because we have a large, expensive military. It’s simple due course to keep it up to date. Contracts with private companies is the typical way we do that.
If the question were about something such as to do with military spending or military size, I wouldn’t have an easy time answering. But stamping AI on everything is usually okay these days. Even military.
