There’s a TikTok page I came across yesterday. It uses AI to generate videos of a fictional old rich woman giving life advice to young women in a sassy tone. She calls herself “your rich bitch iconic baddie auntie.” It’s really funny but scary.
You’ll find videos of her doing yoga, giving dating tips, and other lifestyle tips. She even uses private jets, yatch, and luxurious cars. If you’re not vigilant, you won’t know it’s AI.
But the issue is that I’ve seen some naive ladies on TikTok stitching her videos to theirs and agreeing with her advices. Some even look up to her without knowing if it’s AI or a man behind the account.
If people are taking advice from deep fake, what does that say about how AI would shape our culture, values, or even gender roles in the future?
I enjoy the content, but lowkey I’m worried.
It’s all AI-generated, and I don’t know which tool the page is using but it looks like Veo 3. Check it out here.
Ignoring the other ethical issues(such as stolen data), this generally pollutes Tiktok or other platforms with what can be termed as AI slop. There’s no real active creation involved in these, they are just generally there for view farming and to generate revenue for the creator for no effort. These AI channels/profiles do not care about spreading a message or showing stuff off, they just want the revenue, and Tiktok is the perfect platform to capture views due to doomscrolling
This one video here from this account has 5.7 million views for no active input, which roughly equates to about $100-$200 from Tiktok for said account.[1]
And because of the amount of this AI slop out there that people, including yourself may say that:
It can in fact cause a warped perception of the world as the AI creators only want views and do. This wealth shown here doesn’t exist in reality and so can push for different, but unintentional values.
As for this:
The bigger problem is if they decide to lazily copy other controversial or negative viewpoints such as the manosphere which would spread the harmful messages more, especially if they continue to get views. AI at this time can only reflect what is otherwise pushed out, and if these ideas remain popular, than the AI content farms will pivot to them thus making them more popular. However there is always a human source that these AI content farms try to attach on to, because these things
Have you heard of degenerative AI? It’s the idea that AI trained on AI-produced content will collapse. But perhaps, as these videos continue to populate social and other entertainment spaces, we will see something different. Maybe TikTok content is going to be a completely different language one day.
I’m not talking about TV to Radio. Or fad to fad. Or generation X content to generation Z content. I’m talking about a whole new beast: a cyborg beast.
Oh man, I’ve seen even worse to be honest. I saw an account the other day that impersonated a licensed doctor and was giving “tips” on how to maintain skin health and a youthful look. Lo and behold, one of the “tips” went something along the lines of “Use coconut cream, I like [this one] on Amazon but any will work”. The account had mass-produced hundreds of these videos, each with a few thousand views, slowly nudging the consumer towards a set of products.
I fear it will only get worse.
I think the system is already resistant to this; a lot of newer models (which you’ve probably already seen implemented with ChatGPT) is reinforcement learning through human feedback. So, large content generation models get to try new things, garner likes/comments/shares, and slowly learn what amplifies their impact the most. A fully autonomous AI content system will absolutely leverage these tools that are already baked into the system, enabling it to continue to learn what is most addictive to people.
