What to do when AI takes all our jobs?

With open AI releasing a new pre-print study(not peer reviewed) that in controlled environments, most LLM models including chatGPT and its american competitors outperform humans in some middle roles, including software engineering.

To me this is a warning sign on how the industry is going with how we are slowing all becoming at risk of being replaced by LLMs.

What I want to know is as these models develop and get deployed to replace humans, what are we supposed to do as in our current economic model, work is required in order to make enough money to survive and pay for basic necessities(shelter, food, water, etc). And how will the current economic system survive when people can’t buy things due to not having a wage from work?

While I didn’t deep dive into it too much myself, I will say that writing code and software engineering are definitely two different disciplines - the former of which people are seeing AI performant at, and assume that software engineers will be replaced.

Regardless, I think that if AI does create a mass job displacement, we’ll see an instance of societal shift away from our current economic model. With severe unemployment (let’s say 10-20%), your whole system begins to come to a halt, and those jobs need replaced effective immediate. One way or another, there’ll be a way to apply their skills or ability, even if it’s in another field - lest the whole economy begins to stop.
